Maia Blackstone is Maira's mother in Caelthys' Awakening, and the woman whose reputation walks into every room several steps ahead of her.

At first glance, she is precisely what her rank suggests. Disciplined. Controlled. A woman who reached the pinnacle of military strength through pure, unyielding capability, and who carries that capability into an interrogation room the way other people carry a title. When she spends five hours unleashing the full weight of it on a bound prisoner, her face gives away nothing. Not satisfaction. Not doubt. Nothing at all.

It would be easy to leave her there, a woman defined entirely by the worst thing she does on the page. But Maia is not simple cruelty wearing a uniform, and the book is careful to make sure you understand the shape of what built her.

She is Maelor Blackstone's niece, raised in the shadow of a family legend the histories call the Slayer of the Ocean Queen. She grew up watching her mother, Melina, bury one sibling to that legacy and spend the rest of her life terrified of losing her child the same way. She has spent her entire adulthood believing, with total conviction, that the horrors she inflicts are the price of keeping her family and her people alive. That conviction doesn't make what she does forgivable. It makes it something worse, in a way: cruelty that has fully convinced itself it's necessary.

What I find most striking about Maia is the quiet contradiction underneath the legend. This is a woman who took in her niece Mylia after tragedy struck that branch of the family, who kept the girl deliberately shielded from the military and its truths, who understood, on some level, that not everyone should have to carry what the Blackstone name demands. She is capable of protecting the people she loves. She has simply decided, somewhere along the way, that protection sometimes requires becoming something unrecognizable to do it.

Maia never asked to be the legend her family built. She just decided, a long time ago, that someone in her bloodline had to be willing to do the unforgivable, so that the people she loved wouldn't have to.
